Standard support for Windows 10 ended on 14 October 2025. Windows 10 PCs do not suddenly stop working, but normal security updates, feature updates and Microsoft technical support are no longer provided for standard Windows 10 installations.
Can my PC upgrade to Windows 11?
The first step is to check whether the computer meets the Windows 11 hardware requirements. Microsoft’s PC Health Check tool can help identify compatibility issues. Before upgrading a business PC, it is also important to check any specialist software, printers and other hardware that the computer depends on.
What if the PC cannot run Windows 11?
Replacing the computer is often the most practical long-term option. Extended Security Updates (ESU) may provide additional time for eligible systems, but should be treated as a transition option rather than a reason to postpone planning indefinitely.
Could Linux be an alternative?
For some older PCs and some workloads, a supported Linux distribution can be a useful alternative. It is not suitable for every user or business application, so software and workflow compatibility should be checked first.
Back up before making changes
Before an operating-system upgrade or computer replacement, make sure important files are backed up and that you know how applications, email and business data will be moved.
Some Windows 10 LTSC editions follow different lifecycle dates, so organisations using specialist or embedded systems should check the lifecycle for the exact edition in use.
